Hundreds of child care facilities were damaged during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and many remain closed.

Nearly a third of the child care centers in the Greater New Orleans remain closed since hurricane Katrina. Many of the centers that are open are not operating at full capacity because they lack staff, toys, learning materials, and equipment. At the same time, a number of families are more dependent on center-based care because their network of friends, family, and family child care homes no longer exists. Families in both Southeastern and Southwestern Louisiana are struggling to find quality care that is affordable and convenient.
